Program instructions for Essay and/or School-Specific Questions:

The following are required school-specific questions. Responses must be typed into the Essay portion of the Application Checklist. Responses should appear in numerical order, and each response should be preceded by the corresponding essay number to separate and differentiate responses.

School-Specific Question Entries:

  1. Statement of Purpose: This statement should be a concise, well-written essay about your educational background and reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in public health, specifically geared to the program to which you are applying. This essay should be approximately 1500 words in length. You should give information about: A. Your background as it pertains to your academic and professional goals. B. The motivating influences that stimulated interest in your specific discipline. C. Your future career goals and objectives. D. Indicate how an advanced degree from Michigan SPH will help to achieve your education and career objectives.
  2. Personal Statement (Optional): This should be a brief description of your background and any personal and life experiences, including social, cultural, familial, educational or other opportunities and challenges that motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan. This is not an academic "Statement of Purpose" but a discussion of the personal journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree. This essay should be approximately 500 words in length.
  3. Michigan Dual Degrees: If you are planning a dual degree program, please indicate the other program at University of Michigan. (i.e. Business, Law, Public Policy, or if self-initiated please specify)
  4. Financial Aid: A. Do you wish to be considered for Financial Aid? B. What is the highest level of education achieved by each of your parents? (i.e. elementary school, high school, associate's degree, bachelor's degree, etc.) C. When you were growing up, how many parents/adults lived in your household? If necessary, please explain.
  5. Financial Aid: Describe the nature of any need-based aid you received at the undergraduate level. (Type "None", "Pell Grant", Work-Study". For additional types, please give a brief explanation)
  6. U.S. Military Service: Indicate your anticipated status at the time you enroll. (on active duty US military, veteran of US armed forces, US reserves or national guard, US military dependent)
  7. Domestic Applicant Test Requirements:
MPH, MHSA: GRE or GMAT required. MCAT accepted only for dual MD/MPH or MD/MHSA applicants.
International Applicant Test Requirements:
Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate satisfactory proficiency in the English language as measured by the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB. TOEFL is preferred. All successful applicants are required to complete the Cornell University Graduate School application, and pay the Graduate School application fee, within two weeks of being accepted into the program. Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended are required.

Additional Information

Additional Domestic Applicant Requirements:
Official transcripts should be submitted to HAMPCAS from any institution at which an applicant has completed post-secondary coursework. This is regardless of length of study, number of credits earned, or whether or not a degree was awarded.
Additional International Applicant Requirements:
All International students will be required to submit a seperate transcript evaluation of international coursework. Reference/Recommendation Requirements:
Three letters of recommendation are required. Academic or professional references are to be submitted through HAMPCAS. Personal references will not be accepted.

Additional Interview Information:
The interviews are scheduled after the faculty and Chair review the documentation that has been submitted. A date and time are scheduled that is convenient for the student and the Chair, who interviews the students who meet the criteria for admission and are approved by the faculty. The interview is usually in person and is between 45 minutes and one hour. Students are encouraged to ask questions about the program.
